This would definitely help when selecting whole families. Geometry many times has unworkable names.

  I find that this particular setting depends on what type of models you are working with.

  .ifc type files work well with the Geometry setting, but when working with predominantly .rvt files, First Object will select the elements at the family level.

  Learning new things! That was exactly what I was looking for and I understand the reasoning for "First Object" naming now. Thank you, Laura! This can be closed I'd think.
