Publishing Revit projects to Revizto Follow
This article describes how to publish Revit projects to Revizto.
Overview
You can publish models and sheets from a Revit project to Revizto.
Prerequisites
Before you publish Revit projects to Revizto, ensure that the following conditions are met:
-
Your computer meets the requirements for publishing projects.
-
Both Revit and Revizto are installed on your computer.
-
You have the required access rights in the destination Revizto project.
The required set of access rights depends on your goals. Consult the following table.
Right Description Add new 3D models Publish new 3D models and new versions of the 3D models that you published earlier.
This does not grant the right to publish new versions of 3D models that were previously published by other Revizto users.
Manage all 3D models Publish all 3D models, including new versions of the 3D models that were previously published by other Revizto users. Add new sheets Publish new sheets and new versions of sheets that you published earlier.
This does not grant the right to publish new versions of sheets that were previously published by other Revizto users.
Manage all sheets Publish all sheets, including new versions of sheets that were previously published by other Revizto users. Assign custom object properties This right is required to set model coordinates in Revizto when you publish a 3D model for the first time.
Principles
You can publish the following from a Revit project to Revizto:
-
A model with its linked models, viewpoints, textures, grids, rooms, areas, object geometries, object properties, and point clouds.
-
Sheets that belong to the model and its linked models with their numbers, names, revisions, and properties.
When you publish models and sheets from a Revit project to Revizto, the following rules apply:
-
You can publish one of the following: the objects included in the specified view or the objects included in the current selection.
-
When you publish sheets for the first time, they are published to a folder that is named after the model file. Then you can edit the structure of sheet folders in Revizto as you like. The folder structure will be preserved during the next publishing.
-
When you re-publish a Revit project, the destination scene is completely overwritten. If some models are missing from the view or selection that you published, they will be deleted from Revizto after publishing.
-
When you re-publish a Revit project, the sheets that you publish overwrite their previous versions. Sheets that were deleted from the Revit project are not deleted from Revizto.
Limitations
When you publish models and sheets from a Revit project to Revizto, the following limitations apply:
- Line weight and patterns are not supported.
-
Texture patterns are not published.
-
Decal textures might be applied incorrectly (for example, they might be rotated) due to Revit API limitations.
Publishing options
These options apply when you publish Revit projects to Revizto.
Model publishing settings
When you publish your Revit project to Revizto, you can specify the model publishing settings.
Basic settings
These settings apply when you publish Revit models to Revizto.
Option | Description |
Publish 3D models (select view) |
Select the 3D view to be published. Only the elements that are visible in the view will be published to Revizto. |
Viewpoints |
If you want to publish Revit views to Revizto viewpoints, select this checkbox.
|
Textures |
If you want to publish textures, select this checkbox. This option is recommended when the material appearance is important.
|
Grids | If you want to publish grids, select this checkbox. |
Rooms | If you want to publish rooms, select this checkbox. |
Areas | If you want to publish areas, select this checkbox. |
Point clouds |
If you want to publish all point clouds linked to the Revit project, select this checkbox and select the point cloud quality (the minimum distance between points). The point size will be adjusted based on the distance. You can change the point size after publishing in the Edit > Visual Effects section of your Revizto project. Publishing point clouds with higher quality will increase the size of the resulting Revizto project and the publishing time. |
Advanced settings | See Advanced settings. |
Advanced settings
These settings apply when you publish Revit models to Revizto. To view them, in the publishing settings dialog, click the Advanced options button.
Option | Description |
Publish object parts as separate geometries | If you want to publish parts of elements as separate geometry nodes in the object tree, select this checkbox. |
Publish object properties in compatibility format |
If you would like object properties to be published in the format of Revizto 5.12 or earlier, select this check box. This is recommended for projects created in Revizto 5.12 or earlier as some numeric object properties might be published as text, which can cause issues with “<” and “>” comparison operators in search sets. It is not recommended to change this setting during the project. |
Publish all instances of duplicate nested links |
If you would like to publish all instances of nested links that are linked multiple times, select this check box. |
Sheet publishing settings
When you publish your Revit project to Revizto, you can specify the sheet publishing settings.
Basic settings
These settings apply when you publish Revit sheets to Revizto. To view them, in the publishing settings dialog, click the Select sheets button.
Option | Description |
Sheet grouping |
When you select any of these options, the list of sheets is regrouped based on the selected option. The upper part of the list contains groupings based on the sheet properties. Property-based groupings are not updated automatically when you add new sheets to the project. To publish new sheets, select them manually. The lower part of the list contains Revit sheet sets. When you select a sheet set, the entire set is published, and other sheets are not published. If you add new sheets to the set later, they will be published to Revizto during the next publishing. |
Sheet tree |
If you have not selected a sheet set, select the sheets that you want to publish. |
|
Click the buttons to toggle between the vector and image formats. Vector sheets have better quality. It is the recommended option. |
Publish sheets from linked files |
Adds the sheets from the linked Revit models to the sheet tree. This checkbox is available only if your Revit project has linked models. |
Publish sheet coordinates only |
Select this checkbox to publish only viewport coordinates, without the drawings. You might want to use this option if your workflow includes updating sheets from PDF files. If a destination sheet is a CDE sheet, only the sheet viewport coordinates are published, regardless of the value of this checkbox. |
Publishing method |
The PDF, DWFx, or DWF printer used to print vector sheets from Revit before publishing them to Revizto. Built-in printers (recommended):
If you use a third-party PDF printer, ensure that it supports the paper size required for your sheets. There is no need to set the paper size, orientation, and margins in the PDF printer settings because Revizto will do it. You might want to review other printer settings before publishing. |
Match sheets by |
Specify how to map Revit sheets to existing Revizto sheets. For the detailed description of the options, see Mapping Revit sheets to Revizto sheets. This option replaced the "Merge similar sheets from different files" option in Revizto 5.10. |
Mapping Revit sheets to Revizto sheets
When you re-publish a Revit project, Revizto creates a mapping between Revit and Revizto sheets, and then overwrites Revizto sheets with their new versions.
In most cases, you can keep the default mapping rule and skip reading this section. However, if duplicate sheets appear in your Revizto project or different sheets overwrite each other, you can correct this by selecting another mapping rule.
Revizto can use four sheet parameters to map Revit sheets to Revizto sheets:
-
Revit GUID
This field has unique values within a single Revit model. However, if you publish sheets from several Revit models, they might have duplicate Revit GUIDs. Usually, sheets created from the same template in different Revit models have identical GUIDs.
-
Revit file name
-
Sheet number
-
Sheet name
The following mapping rules are available:
Rule | Description |
Combination of parameters |
Revizto compares three sheet parameters:
If at least two parameters match in Revit and Revizto, it is the same sheet. If several matches are found, Revizto selects the sheet where all three parameters match. This is the recommended option. The mapping rules were changed in Revizto version 5.10. If you updated Revizto from version 5.9 or earlier to version 5.10 or later, the first publishing will use the Revizto 5.9 mapping rule for backward compatibility. Subsequent publishings will use the "Combination of parameters" mapping rule. |
Sheet number + Revit GUID |
Revizto compares two sheet parameters:
If both parameters match in Revit and Revizto, it is the same sheet. If several matches are found, Revizto selects the sheet with a matching Revit file name. Use this option only when advised by the Revizto support team. The mapping rules were changed in Revizto version 5.10. If you updated Revizto from version 5.9 or earlier to version 5.10 or later, the first publishing will use the Revizto 5.9 mapping rule for backward compatibility. Subsequent publishings will use the "Sheet number + Revit GUID" mapping rule. |
Sheet number + Revit file name |

Use this option only when advised by the Revizto support team. The mapping rules were changed in Revizto version 5.10. If you updated Revizto from version 5.9 or earlier to version 5.10 or later, the first publishing will use the Revizto 5.9 mapping rule for backward compatibility. Subsequent publishings will use the "Sheet number + Revit file name" mapping rule. |

If you updated Revizto from version 5.9 or earlier to version 5.10 or later, the first publishing will use the Revizto 5.9 mapping rule for backward compatibility. Subsequent publishings will use the "Revit GUID + Revit file name" mapping rule. |
Sheet number |
If the sheet numbers match, it is the same sheet. You might want to use this option if the previous sheet versions in Revizto were never published directly from Revit. |
Sheet number + sheet name |
If the sheet numbers and sheet names match, it is the same sheet. You might want to use this option if the previous sheet versions in Revizto were never published directly from Revit. |

Troubleshooting
To troubleshoot publishing of Revit projects to Revizto, see the following sections:
Starting publishing
Q: In Revit, the "Revizto 5" menu item is unavailable.
A: Do one of the following:
-
If the menu item is present but not clickable, switch to a 3D view.
-
If the menu item is missing, ensure that the following conditions are met:
-
You are using a supported Revit version.
-
Revizto is installed on your computer.
If both conditions are met, the Revit plug-in that was installed with Revizto is missing or corrupted. To restore the plug-in, close Revit and reinstall Revizto.
-
Q: Can I publish Revit LT projects to Revizto?
A: There is no Revizto plug-in for Revit LT. However, you can publish Revit LT projects to IFC or FBX files, and then import them to Revizto.
Publishing errors
Q: When I publish a project from Revit to Revizto, I get the "The source project is closed. Please open the project and try again." error.
A: There is no active project in Revit. The project was probably closed after you opened the publishing wizard. Open the project and try again.
Q: When I publish a project from Revit to Revizto, I get the "Please select the 3D View first" error.
A: The view that you selected for publishing is not a 3D view. It was probably changed after you opened the publishing wizard. Select a 3D view and try again.
Q: When I publish a project from Revit to Revizto, I get the "3D view rendering is currently not supported in the running instance of Revit" error.
A: Revit cannot render the 3D view because Revit Material Library is not installed. To learn how to install it, consult Autodesk documentation.
Q: When I publish a project from Revit to Revizto, I get the "An exception occurred while saving the document" error.
A: An error occurred while saving a project before publishing. Save the Revit project manually and try again.
Q: When I publish a project from Revit to Revizto, I get the "The project is locked by another instance of Revizto. To unlock the project, close other Revizto instances on your device." error.
A: Another application is writing data to a Revizto project. This might be manual or scheduled publishing from another authoring tool, or a project sync. Wait until the operation is completed or cancel it.
Q: Revit crashes when I publish a lot of sheets manually.
A: Do one of the following:
-
Schedule the publishing instead of publishing the sheets manually.
The scheduler sends 50 sheets at a time to ensure that the memory does not run out, and if Revit crashes, it restarts publishing.
-
Publish sheets manually in smaller batches.
Q: During the scheduled publishing from Revit to Revizto, Revit does not start.
A: Revit might not start because it cannot sign in to Autodesk services. Check whether your Autodesk account is active.
Q: When I choose to update an existing model, some of the models in the list are unavailable. They are marked with the icon.
A: This can have the following reasons:
-
The first version of the model was published by another project member, and you do not have enough rights to overwrite it.
-
The model was published from another authoring tool. It can be overwritten only from that authoring tool.
Please consult with the project owner on the correct method of updating the model.
Q: My Revit plug-in is stopping scheduled publishing from working.
A: Some Revit plug-ins, such as Guardian for Revit, can prevent scheduled tasks from running correctly. Check if there are actions within the plug-in (such as specifying a workset) you need to complete or disable the plug-in on the device running the scheduler.
Publishing results
Q: I cannot find a published model in Revizto.
A: Do the following:
-
In the Revizto application, open the object tree.
-
In the object tree, right-click the model and click Focus on objects.
-
If you still cannot find the model, in the object tree, right-click the model and click Isolate.
Note. You can undo the isolation by clicking Undo
at the bottom toolbar.
Q: A model that was previously imported to Revit from Navisworks was not published to Revizto. How do I add it to Revizto?
A: Publish the model to Revizto from Navisworks.
Q: When I publish updated sheets or sheet coordinates from Revit with Revizto 5.9 or earlier, duplicate sheets appear in Revizto.
A: See Publish from Revit: duplicate sheets.
Q: When I publish sheets from Revit with Revizto 5.9 or earlier, different sheets overwrite each other in Revizto.
A: See Publish from Revit: different sheets overwrite each other.
Q: The colors of some objects in the Revizto model are different from the colors of the source Revit model.
A: These objects are included in multiple Revit appearance filters. Revizto cannot obtain the order of the filters, and applies them in the random order.
To fix the issue, ensure that each object is included in a single Revit filter.
Q: After publishing from Revit, some parts of a model are not displayed in Revizto.
A: This can have the following reasons:
-
The view that you selected in the publishing settings does not include the model parts.
Select a view that includes the models parts, and then re-publish the model.
-
The view that you selected in the publishing settings includes a filter by discipline. The model parts were filtered out.
Do one of the following:
-
In Revit, in the view that you selected in the publishing settings, select a filter by another discipline that includes the model parts.
-
In Revizto, in the appearance profiler, remove the filter by discipline and click Apply. Then, at the top of the Viewpoints pane, click New viewpoint
, click More
, and click Set home viewpoint.
-
-
During the manual publishing, you had some model parts selected. As a result, only the selected parts were published.
Clear the selection in Revit, and then re-publish the model.
-
The camera visibility distance in Revizto is short. The model parts were published but you cannot see them from that distance.
In the Revizto application, do one of the following:
-
Move closer to see the missing parts.
-
In Preferences > Camera, increase the camera visibility distance.
-
-
In the Revit project, the model parts were not loaded due to an error.
Correct the error and re-publish the model.
-
To optimize model rendering, Revizto draws only one side of each polygon. You do not see the polygons because their surfaces that face your point of view are not displayed.
Q: After publishing from Revit, some of the rooms are missing in Revizto.
A: The phase setting for the rooms might be different from the phase setting on the view that was published. Check that the rooms are present in the same phase set for the view that was published to Revizto.
Q: When I use a third-party PDF printer to publish a sheet, the sheet is not published or contains visual errors.
A: Print the sheet from Revit to a PDF file manually.
-
If you get the same errors, it is a PDF printer issue. Check the PDF printer settings.
-
If you don’t get the same errors, select another printer (for example, DWFx) or submit a support request.
Q: When I publish sheets from Revit to Revizto using the DWFx printer, the fonts change.
Example:
A: The fonts change due to DWFx format constraints. To preserve the fonts, use a PDF printer.
Q: When I use a third-party PDF printer in the sheet publishing, it crops the sheets.
A: The PDF printer that you selected does not support the paper size required for your sheets. It uses the default A4 paper size instead, and your sheets do not fit.
Select a printer that supports the required paper size.
Q: When I publish a Revit project to Revizto using CutePDF Writer, the sheets are not published.
A: The Revizto plug-in saves the sheets to PDF files before publishing them to Revizto. If the path to these files, which includes the project title and the working folder, contains non-Latin characters, CutePDF Writer cannot save the file.
Do one of the following:
-
Ensure that your project title and your working folder contain only Latin characters.
-
Use another PDF writer.
Scheduler
Q: Publishing does not start at the scheduled time.
A: Do the following:
-
Ensure that at least one weekday is selected in the publishing schedule.
-
Ensure that the computer that runs the publishing is turned on, is not in sleep mode, and you are signed in to the Windows user account that you use to run publishing.
-
Ensure that the Microsoft Windows user account that you use to run publishing is a member of the Administrators group.
